How to Paint Vertical 6" Wall Stripes

By Yelena Kublitski

How would you like to visually "lift" a ceiling and make any room seem taller with only some creatively applied paint and color?

That can be easily achieved by painting 6" vertical stripes on the walls in 2 colors of your choice.

What You'll Need:

To start, assemble some low tack blue painter's tape, a plumb line, a ruler or measuring tape, and a pencil or off color chalk (visible on the base coat).

You will also need a stepladder for reaching the ceiling (if the stripes will start from the ceiling), and of course most importantly, the paint in two colors you desire - make sure it's latex (you don't want the mess and harmful fumes of alkyd paints).

Buy a brush - it should have synthetic bristles that are angled (for easier cutting in the corners), and 3 to 4 inches wide.

Finally, get a 9 inch paint roller (for applying the base color) along with a 6 inch foam roller (for painting the stripes) and a roller paint tray (regular size).

All assembled? Now we are ready to begin.

How to Do It:

- First step is to apply the base color - use a brush to cut in along the ceiling, baseboards and trim, then fill in the walls with a roller. When the paint is dry, check to see if a second coat is needed. Wait 24-48 hours before proceeding to taping the walls.

- While the paint is still drying, do some math. Measure the width of each wall in inches, add it all up, and then divide it by 12. If you don't get a whole number, you'll need to make your stripes a tad wider or narrower, or just start in the least seen corner.

- Next, lay out the stripes on the walls. Start in one corner and move from left to right. Mark 6 inch intervals right under the ceiling using your ruler or measuring tape, then pin the plumb line to the first mark. Trace lightly with a pencil or chalk along the plumb line every foot all the way down to the baseboard. Repeat for each mark.

When you come to a window or door, just work around them as if hanging wallpaper.

- After marking all that you will paint, you will need to tape off the stripes along the pencil or chalk marks on the outside edge of each stripe that will be painted. You know you have done it right when you are looking at two different widths of stripes when finished.

- Remember to also mask the ceiling, baseboards and any other surface you don't want to get paint on.

We are done with preparation - now the fun part: painting the wider of the stripes.

- Use the small roller and paint with the secondary color. Use the brush to cut in along the ceiling and baseboard and if needed, you can roll on a second coat after the first one dries.

- Once all the paint coats are applied, remove the tape and wipe away any paint that may have seeped under with a damp towel.

And there you have it - a beautifully painted vertical striped pattern on the walls!

Special Hint: The actual painting will go very quickly if you spend the time on measuring, marking and taping that it deserves. Remember, great results come from great preparation!

Thanks for this tip along with the precise instructions. Unfortunately I can't do this as I am renting at present, but for future reference I'd like to know if any two colors will make a room look taller, or if they have to be of the same hue, or on opposite ends of the spectrum, or what? The pic you uploaded seems to be tangerine with either rose or beige, not too sure what to infer from that.

This is very similar to the technique we use to put basketball lines on gym floors. The basic differences are we use two coats of clear urethane sealer as the base coat, the painted area is one inch and two inches wide and we use one coat of oil base enamel in a different color for each game. Solid keys and wide borders like seen on TV college basketball mean we are just filling in a larger area.

The circles are the fun part. Thanks for the great Intel.
